So how have the major global companies fared over the course of last year? Which are the companies that surprised us the most in terms of growth in their brand value?And, what does the future hold for some of the world’s biggest brands? Let’s find out!<br />

The Brand Value of Apple Continues To Dwarf Its Rivals</h4>

For what is now the 7th year in a row, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is Forbes’ most valuable brand in the world in 2017. This comes as no surprise as Apple’s public perception continues to soar, along with its market valuation and profits. Despite slightly lowered shipment numbers in their last fiscal quarter, Apple continued to churn out healthy profits.<br />

They also reached yet another historic milestone earlier this month, when their market cap smashed the $800 billion barrier. Now, Forbes has also deemed them the world’s most valuable brand with a value of $170 billion. This represents a growth of 10% from last year’s valuation of $154.1 billion.<br />

It is a testament to Apple’s brand strength that they only needed to spend about $1.8 billion on advertising, which is lower than most of its top 10 rivals. With the near unparalleled hype and frenzy surrounding the release of the upcoming 10th anniversary iPhone, Apple’s brand value will continue to soar in the near future.<br />

<br />Google And Microsoft Lead The Competing Pack</h4>
<br />
Despite Apple’s soaring brand value, they now face more competition than they have in the past few years. Google continued their strong upward trend, with a 23% growth. This has resulted in the brand value of Google soaring to $101.8 billion in 2017. The Google brand’s strong growth and the mammoth $3.9 billion Google spent on advertising was enough to fend off Microsoft, who came in at third place. Microsoft’s brand value is $87 billion, 16% up from last year.<br />

However, the star performers this year were Amazon and Facebook. The brand value of Facebook continued to skyrocket as it leapfrogged Coca-Cola into 4th place with a value of $73.5 billion. This represents a massive 40% improvement over last year! Despite this, they were overshadowed by Amazon. With a 54% increase, the brand value of Amazon has risen to $54.1 billion, placing them in the top ten for the first time.<br />

On the other end of the spectrum, IBM’s brand strength continued its alarming downward spiral. With a near 20% depreciation, <b>IBM’s brand</b> value fell to $33.3 billion, dropping them out of the top 10 to 13th place.This likely due to the company’s new direction of focusing on cloud computing rather than hardware/software. Apple’s chief rivals, Samsung only managed minimal growth in brand value at 6% to come in at 10th place. This is likely due to the Note 7 fiasco, which negatively affected Samsung’s brand value.<br />

<br />Tech And Financial Service Dominates As Automotive Companies Falter</h4>

Technology Brands continued to dominate Forbes’ list, with 6 in the top 10. There was a total of 18 in the 100 strong list, the most out of any industry. Financial service companies also performed well, with 13 in the top 100, led by American Express at 22nd place. New entrant Allianz also managed to make to the list at 100th place.<br />

Automotive brands, which had been performing quite well for the past couple of years, faltered, with only 11 making the cut this time. Leading brands like <b>Toyota</b>, <b>BMW</b>, <b>Honda</b>, <b>Ford</b> and <b>Audi</b> all performed poorly, with stagnating or depreciating brand values. German manufacturer <b>Volkswagen</b> fell out of the top 100 amid scandals involving fake emission tests.<br />

On the Other Side, Apple Must Worry</h4>

Apple has been the world’s most valuable brand for a while now. However, their brand value growth is slowing down. At 10% growth in Apple’s brand value, it is quite a bit lower than competitors like <b>Google</b>, <b>Amazon</b> and <b>Facebook</b>. If the upcoming <b>iPhone 8 </b>becomes successful, we can expect Apple’s brand to soar higher and widen the gap even more. However, if the iPhone 8 fails to perform, we may just see someone else taking their crown.<br />

The most likely challengers at the moment are Google and Facebook with the high growth in their brand value. Despite the monumental growth, Amazon’s brand value is too far behind at the moment for the gap to close anytime soon. It will tie into Google’s digital advertising business. When the integration launches in earnest this year, the ad clicks of Google Account users will be matched to data about their brick-and-mortar purchases.<br />

The company won’t be able to examine specific items purchased or how much a specific person spent, but it will use the collated data to track the effectiveness of <b><a href="https://whatadvertising.blogspot.sg/2014/10/email-marketing-effective-beginners.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">online ad campaigns</a></b>. And eventually, it will give retailers a detailed sales report.<br />

Google’s using login information such as email addresses to identify the people clicking on ads. It matches that data with information from <b><a href="https://whatadvertising.blogspot.sg/2013/11/what-are-top-internet-auction-websites.html">merchants an offline purchased</a></b>, credit card issuers to determine if digital ads motivated an offline purchase.<br />

It won’t work for all payments. Retail customers who pay with cash or use one of the 30 percent of U.S. debit and credit cards that Google can’t access won’t be tracked. And it only tracks customers who login to Google’s services.<br />

But it’s an improvement over the current system, which susses out users’ interests mainly from web searches and the content they consume across the company’s services — including Gmail, YouTube, and Android.<br />

And it’s a veritable firehouse of purchases. Google said it has access to roughly 70 percent of U.S. credit and debit card sales through partnerships with companies that track them.<br />

Google’s insists that it’s taken steps to protect users’ privacy. Sridhar Ramaswamy, Google’s senior vice president of ads and commerce, told the Associated Press that “incredibly smart people” designed the new tool to be “secure and […] safe.” Data’s collected in a double-blind way, he said, meaning that data Google’s collected can’t be viewed by merchants or credit partners.<br />

Google’s hoping the new system will convince merchants to boost advertising budgets. The company, which runs an ad network valued at $80 billion, faces increasing competition from social media juggernaut Facebook. Together, the two companies are projected make up 74 percent of digital ad growth in 2017.<br />

Two months ago, major <a href="https://www.youtube.com/user/advertise" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">YouTube advertisers</a> including <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coca-Cola" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Coca-Cola</a>, <a href="https://www.amazon.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Amazon.com</a>, <a href="https://www.walmart.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Walmart</a>, <a href="https://www.starbucks.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Starbucks</a>, and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Microsoft</a> pulled campaigns from YouTube, citing faulty filters that prevented ads from appearing next to <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homophobia" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">homophobic</a>, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antisemitism" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">anti-Semitic</a>, and racist content. In response, Google made changes to <b><a href="https://www.youtube.com/static?template=terms" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">YouTube’s advertising terms of service</a></b> and said it would improve its blend of user flagging, human moderation, and algorithmic detection.<br />

Are Banner Ads No Longer Effective?<br />

A recent report by <b><a href="http://www.vpon.com/en/casedetail/2016_APAC_MobileAd_Report_EN/index.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Vpon</a></b> finds that 77% of mobile advertising in the APAC region came through banner advertising. Native ads were a distant second with an 11% share, followed by interstitial ads with 10% of the share. This clearly demonstrates that banner ads still make up the bulk of internet advertising. However, a deeper look paints a much more grim picture for the future of banner ads.<br />
<br />
Poor click through rates and user engagement levels have plagued banner ads for a while now. According to <b><a href="http://www.smartinsights.com/internet-advertising/internet-advertising-analytics/display-advertising-clickthrough-rates/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Smartinsights</a></b>, the overall click-through rates for banner ads across all formats is lowly 0.05%. This is exacerbated by the fact that up to 50% of clicks on mobile ads are accidental!.<br />

Another concerning issue is the lack of viewer interest and trust generated by these ads. A study by Infolinks revealed that only 2.8% of people think that the ads on websites are relevant to them. Also, 54% of users avoid clicking banner ads because of a low level of trust.<br />

With the effectiveness of banner ads already at an all-time low, a new enemy has emerged. This new enemy has even got companies like Facebook and Google worried. I am referring to the rise of mobile ad blockers.<br />

The use of mobile ad blockers has experienced a meteoric rise over the past few years. As we previously reported, the use of mobile ad blockers rose by nearly 90% from January 2015 to January 2016.<br />

This is an especially big issue in the APAC region, with <b><a href="https://pagefair.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Pagefair claiming</a></b> that 94% of global mobile ad blocking in 2016 occurred in the Asia-Pacific region. In fact, it has become a common practice for many smartphone manufacturers in this region to ship their phones with preinstalled ad blocking software.<br />
<br />
For example, India, which is the <b><a href="https://whatadvertising.blogspot.sg/2013/06/top-mobile-ad-networks.html">largest mobile ad market</a></b> in APAC with 23.3% of the total biddable inventory, has a smartphone ad blocker adoption rate of 59%. These are very damning facts for the mobile digital advertising industry and suggest a need for a shift in strategy.<br />

The Rise of Native Advertising</h4>

The declining effectiveness of banner advertising can be juxtaposed with the rising popularity of native advertising. Native advertising follows a new and state of the art marketing approach. This new approach is much less obtrusive, almost integrating into the content itself.<br />

The new ad offering, called Audience Direct, will <b><a href="https://whatadvertising.blogspot.com/2013/12/video-ad-networks-list.html">invite publishers to list video ad</a></b> inventory for sale from across their properties and to specify pricing.<br />

The move comes as Facebook is intensifying its push into video. Facebook believes its new tool can streamline and modernize the labor-intensive ad-buying process. Currently, ad sellers and buyers often negotiate and place orders in a more manual fashion, including via phone, email, and even fax machine.<br />

“We’ve heard from video publishers that today their existing business is mainly direct-sold,” said <b><a href="http://www.businessinsider.sg/facebook-wants-to-help-publishers-sell-more-ads-using-its-data-2017-5/?r=US&IR=T" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Facebook’s vice president of publisher solutions, Brian Boland</a></b>. “That business has some opportunities and challenges as it moves to digital.”<br />

Various other advertising technology companies already provide similar sales tools for publishers, which are often referred to as “programmatic direct” or “automated guaranteed” technologies.<br />
<br />
But Facebook is betting that the addition of its powerful targeting and tracking capabilities will make its offering more attractive for marketers, and potentially more lucrative and efficient for publishers.<br />
<br />
Mr. Boland said the Audience Direct tool will function separately from Facebook’s existing Audience Network, a product that allows marketers to target specific groups of users across a wide range of websites and properties.<br />

By contrast, Audience Direct is designed to broker deals between marketers and individual media properties in a transparent fashion.<br />

“If you’re an advertiser, you can buy from the Audience Network and reach audiences irrespective of the content they’re on. But some marketers do want to buy specific publishers because <b><a class="" href="https://whatadvertising.blogspot.com/2014/09/contextual-digital-advertising-average.html">context</a></b> is important to them,” <b>Mr. Boland said</b>.<br />

Marketers have been especially concerned lately about their online ads showing up alongside objectionable content. But Mr. Boland said Audience Direct isn’t specifically designed to help alleviate those worries. Records seen exclusively by <b>Dublin Live</b> have shown that the <b><a href="https://whatadvertising.blogspot.com/2014/09/30-second-video-advertising.html">cost of advertising campaigns</a></b> urging the public to pay the fee has run into millions of euro in the last few years.<br />
<br />
Between 2011 and 2016, the national broadcaster spent over €2.1m on TV licence ads on television, the radio, in cinemas, and online.<br />
<br />
It follows an interview with <b><a href="http://www.iftn.ie/broadcast/news/?act1=record&only=1&aid=73&rid=4289136&tpl=archnews&force=1" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">RTE's Director General Dee Forbes</a></b> in March, when she revealed €40m-€50m is lost every year as a result of TV licence evasion.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, there was also more than a 65% increase in the cost of paying for the ads over the five-year period.<br />
<br />
In 2011, RTE spent a total of €273,000 on TV licence campaigns, a cost which increased to €451,800 by 2016.<br />
<br />
But while the latter figure represented a huge increase on the spend in 2011, the broadcaster spent more on <b><a href="https://whatadvertising.blogspot.com/2014/08/how-much-tv-advertising-cost.html">TV licence advertising</a></b> in 2014, when the cost was €456,800.<br />
<br />
<b><a href="https://whatadvertising.blogspot.com/2014/10/marketing-benefits-of-radio-advertising.html">Radio advertising</a></b> made up the highest spend on TV licence ad campaigns, with the cost totalling €1,405,000 over the five-year period.<br />
<br />
This was followed by television, which cost €588,200 between 2011 and 2016, and digital/cinema campaigns, which cost €187,900.<br />
<br />
The figures also showed the extent to which the broadcaster has been seeking to advertise online in recent years.<br />
<br />
After spending just €24,100 between 2011 and 2014 - including nothing at all in 2013 - RTE spent €163,800 on digital and cinema advertisements in 2015 and 2016.<br />
<br />
Speaking about the figures, a spokeswoman for RTE said the TV licence ad campaigns were part of the broadcaster's commitment to ensuring its legal obligations.<br />

She said: "The licence fee is vital to RTE in carrying out its legal obligations and meeting its commitments [<b>under the Broadcasting Act 2009</b>].<br />

"It is therefore incumbent on RTE to highlight to the public the importance and value of licence fee via advertising campaigns and through other communications."<br />
